What up Fools. You know what it is. Thanks for the comment love on the first discussion topic. Adam has listed enough music to keep up buzy for a few months. I jacked him for a few mix CD's during a recent trip, and I am loving the tracks.
"I'm supposed to the franchise player and we here talkin' bout practice."
I am hitting yall early with a conversation topic that I always argue about with people. WHO IS THE BEST FEMALE RAPPER OF ALL TIME?
It's hard to come up with anyone off the top of my head, but I'm going with MC Lyte. I have listened to her since I was knee high to a grasshopper and I ain't heard anyone come near taking her off her throne. She had the lyrics, the booming voice, the beats, and the classic cuts for some years. There have been moments of greatness from other female rappers but no consistency. The industry should be ashamed of the over marketed, trashy looking, and garbage so-called female mc's it has been churning out.
Who ya'll got. Let's have an argument.

I would love to argue with you on this one but I can't come up with a female mc that can be in the same ballpark as MC Lyte. Jean Grae is aight in her own right though. Don't know anything about Remy Ma to have an opinion. I'm interested to know Tim who do people throw out there as competition when you argue this topic?? Ms. Dynamite?
Simba,
People say stuff like Foxy Brown or Remy Ma. As you might imagine, they receive harsh and demeaning responses from me.
Other people have responded with Bahamadia or Lauryn Hill. I entertain these arguments, but make quick work of all others.
i would go with lauren hill but only because she had so much help from the great mc wyclef jean. so her lyrics are a lot tighter than most other lady mcs but mc lyte did have that kind of help so maybe she should get more props but i just find her and a lot of other famale mc's stuff is jsut too loose.
i meant mc lyte did NOT have the kind of help lauren hill did
its all about the benjamins baby....
missy elliot
With record sales 7.6 million domestically she is the only female rapper to have six certified platinum albums by the RIAA, including one double platinum plaque.
i also think the fact that she was unattractive increases her cred...although i concede she did have an advantage in working with timbaland
I don't care what anyone says, Bahamadia was the ONLY female rapper I ever cared about. And I cared very deeply. MC Lyte...yawn. Never liked her. Yo-Yo? hahahaha.... Monie Love? Nah, female rappers usually suck because their voices sound terrible in a rap. Whatever you want to say about her actual live voice (not very good in concert), Bahamadia sounds great on wax. As far as longevity is concerned, she just didn't catch on. Not really her fault. A lot of good MCs don't make it. Remember A.L. Skills? He was BAAAAAAAAAD assssss. But what ever happened after his 2 songs on lyricists' lounge? Haven't heard a thing from him.
Listen to BB Queen and there are some standout tracks that will have you thinking Bahamadia is a great MC, not just a great female MC.
i like lauryn hill, alot. i also think mc lyte pales in comparison...i agree with the yawn factor...she was rhyming over speak and spell beats with fisher price flows...but thats the problem with comparing pioneers to those who follow...
bahamadia with talib on soundbombing was amazing...genrally, i think hip hop is a man's game, and it shows by the paucity of great females...lil kim sure could rhyme about suckin dick though....
hahahahahahaa....so true about lil kim. Great lyricist.
Speaking of female MCs, I don't know if any of you took my advice and checked out the Talib Kweli Hot Thing remix but it features Ne Yo and Jean Grae over a Luther Vandross sample...nasty. I'm hooked on it. Feel good music. Jean actually sounds pretty good on it. Sometimes she sounds good and this is one of those times. check it out.
here's a link to it on my MOG page for all you lazy types that won't go out and find it yourselves. Enjoy.
ok, so HERE is the link.

I feel validated that Adam's got my back on Bahamadia.
I don't have much time so I will make this quick.
Missy Elliot! Are you freaking crazy. Does she even rap? If we are just talking record sales then the rapping Scary Spice should also be in the discussion. Don't get me wrong, I love Missy and the spotlight she put on other female artists. She creates great songs, hits, and albums. However, she is not your number one female MC, period.
Lauryn Hill is top three in my eyes, but I can never put her on top because she only has like two albums and one was with a group. Check out my girls resume http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MC_Lyte
If you look at her hits you will understand what longevity is all about. She did all this back in the day too. She opened the door for Bahamadia and Lauryn Hill.
I love Bahamadia's voice and I remember when her first album came out back in the day, but she's not on the map. Underground heads know her, but who else. She is the opposite of Missy; mad skills but no hits. She also lacks Lyte's booming voice that probably kills her stage presence.
Lyte is a pioneer, she's got hits, she can rap, and she can perform. Come on y'all lets just crown her right now. If you want a definitive Lyte song, check out Cha,Cha,Cha and shake your booty a little bit.
Longevity? We talkin bout longevity? Not the game, but longevity?
come on, now. There's more to being great than longevity. It's a factor but it's not the end-all. MC Lyte always bored and annoyed me. Only rarely did I enjoy her. So having longevity but being annoying all the while...I mean, let's just crown Eminem now, too. He's been around 10 years and annoyed me for all 10.
I believe that greatness is about what the artist does while they are there, not how long they manage to be there. I still consider smif n wessun one of the greatest groups in history even though they only had one great album followed by increasingly sub-par offerings. But that one album..."stewed to a perfection!" (c) Dave Chappelle.
If I had 15 bucks to spend and had to choose between MC Lyte and Bahamadia, you know where my money's going. Lyte may have opened the door for other females, but so did Roxanne Shante and we're not throwing her in the ring.
I also consider Mos Def one of the greatest of all time, but he hasn't done a thing to validate that since BOBS. While he was making hip hop, he worked it.
by the way, anyone listen to that link i posted?
Although I agree with Adam, I will note that his animosity towards longevity is deeply rooted matters personal.
I listened to the link - tight.
I'm gonna have to have my secretary review my comments on here. My grammar is so shitty!
Okary. Longevity has to be a consideration when you are talking greatest of all time (no matter how "sore" a subject it might be for Adam).
I might be willing to cut Bahamadia a break if her life was cut short like Biggie's or Big L's, but she has had plenty of time to make something happen. She has been unable to do so.
Let's say we take longevity and the pioneer factor out of the equation and then just focused on lyrics, flow, soulfulness, and overall sound of the music. Bahamadia would still be number two to Lauryn Hill with Lyte a close third.
I have to say that I am not a huge fan of MC Lyte. However, I respect what she has done. I also think that if you look at her body of work in addition to all the other traditional mc characteristics, then she's got to be the GOAT. This is true despite the fact that in my lab, I would much rather listen to Lauryn Hill or some of the Bahamadia smooth grooves.
This discussion will be settled when Lauryn Hill comes back, puts out two more dope albums, and unseats the current Queen. Queen Lyte will then graciously concede the tiara that has rested atop her bleached-blond permed hair for the better part of twenty years.
Yo! This blog is getting good. I want to get it mentioned in a music mag. Does anyone know how can I take it to the next level?
Sore subject, indeed.
People talk about Jay Z being the GOAT for the same reasons that slim is talking about here, but I never cared for him. He just bothers me, not to mention his biting tactics. So regardless of his so-called credentials, he will never be the GOAT. Lyte is the same way. And let's be honest about her: when was her last song or album? When was the last time you heard something new from her? I haven't heard squat from her in over 15 years. That doesn't seem like longevity to me. She was a pioneer, true, but she hasn't exactly remained in the limelight.
Lauryn is similar. She had a huge hit album that everyone loved and then she disappeared, albeit by her own choice. She hasn't done a thing since then, but we're still talking about her chops. Why is Bahamadia discounted just because she never had critical acclaim? She had two albums and she hustled to make it but never caught on. I don't consider BET or MTV or the Source when I decide who the best is. I consider what hits me the hardest. That's Bahamadia.
But I'm a little biased because I hated the fugees and I always resisted lauryn for that reason.
By the way, what's up with the lurkers on this blog? Y'all better start announcing yourselves! You know who you are.
I will have to go with, "I'm the dopest MC that you ever saw.... As long as you let her, do her thing with an eighty nine swing" (Cha Cha Cha). MC LYTE is the reason I love hip hop. How can you not agree? A girl MC that rocked a blonde mushroom, and still the hotness in the streets
